Recently, the term SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) has been featured in many media outlets such as on the TV, in newspapers, and on social networking services (SNS). Many people have probably heard of this term.

SDGs are shared global goals that aim to achieve a sustainable society where no one is left behind, which was adopted during the Sustainable Development Summit 2015. These goals are made up of 17 goals and 169 targets that are to be achieved by 2030.

The entities who are engaged in SDGs are all organizations such as private companies, financial institutions, and civic groups in addition to the UN and national governments, and every single person is expected to participate in achieving SDGs.

The Ricoh Group has identified key issues that need to be addressed based on international social trends, the expectations and requests from our stakeholders, and the transformation into a digital services company, and has been working on the sustainability strategy formulated with the aim of achieving a sustainable society and SDGs.

Concept of sustainability

This article introduces examples of how RICOH360, a Ricoh’s service that utilizes 360-degree images, is contributing to the SDGs.

・Accelerating digital transformation (DX) in the industrial sector with a 360-degree image platform! (SDGs Goal 9)

The SDGs Goal 9 “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation” aims to promote industry that will benefit society using new technology. RICOH360 provided by Ricoh is a “cross-industry platform service” that offers the full package of 360-degree images shot with the 360-degree camera RICOH THETA and apps that use these images, supporting digital transformation in the industrial sector as a global platform.

The following article introduces the universal value of “transcending time and space” provided by 360-degree images as well as our vision that aims to make society better through the use of 360-degree data.

• An efficient way of working using 360-degree images! (SDGs Goal 8)

The SDGs Goal 8 “Decent work and economic growth” aims to ensure that full and productive employment and decent work are available for everyone.

In construction site management, we conduct photo shoots three to four times a week, depending on the needs and circumstances of the project. However, by utilizing 360-degree images, we have significantly reduced the time spent on photography.

・Recording cultural assets as digital data using 360-degree images! (SDGs Goal 11)

The SDGs Goal 11 “Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable” aims to protect global cultural and natural assets, and strives to preserve these assets.

Japan has many familiar tangible and intangible cultural assets that can be handled and experienced, which are passed down through the generations by local people even when these assets are not tourist attractions. However, nowadays fewer people have the desire to “protect and pass on their local culture” which has been passed down through the generations so it has become difficult to pass down this local culture.

The following article introduces an example of digitally archiving cultural assets using RICOH360 to preserve a record of them.

・Using 360-degree images to learn about social issues! (SDGs Goal 17)

The SDGs Goal 17 “Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development” aims to strengthen the global partnership for sustainable development to support the achievement of SDGs especially in developing countries. The following article introduces educational activities achieved by cooperating with partners using 360-degree images.

By watching 360-degree images, we can understand the actual location where social issues are being tackled in various countries, enabling us to then consider these issues and gain inspiration to take action.

The Ricoh Group is working hard to “balance the growth of its business with solving social issues” through various projects. Among these projects, the cross-industry platform service RICOH360 helps to contribute towards SDGs by creating a safe, secure, and work-friendly environment where work sites are recorded, shared, and used in an immersive manner, by keeping a complete record of items with value for future generations, and by supporting simulated experiences of places where people are seldom able to visit.

Our hope is that RICOH360 continues to support SDGs into the future with support for every kind of activity.
